Chinese Premier Visit: 8 Agreements/MoUs inked between India & China
- Chinese Premier Li Keqiang made his first foreign visit to India on 18 May 2013 in a bid to resolve border disputes and to stimulate economic relations.
- On 20 May 2013 eight agreements were signed after delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Chinese counterpart.

India Granted Observer Status in Arctic Council
On 15 May 2013 at the eighth biennial ministerial meeting of the Arctic Council convened in Kiruna, Sweden the Council agreed to include six new nations, including India and China, as observers to their eight-state diplomatic council.

Siddaramaiah elected 22nd Chief Minister of Karnataka
- On 10th May, 2013 Congress leader K Siddaramaiah has been elected as Karnataka's new chief minister.
- He was elected as Chief Minister, after the Congress adopted secret balloting route to select the new chief minister.
- He will be sworn in as the State’s 22nd chief minister on 13th May, 2013.
- 64-year-old Siddaramaiah is a five-time MLA from Varuna constituency in Mysore district.
- He won 2013 election from same constituency on 8th May 2013.
- Earlier, as a Janata Dal (Secular) leader, he was Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka on two occasions(1996 and 2004).
- It is to be noted that Congress swept to power with a comfortable majority of 121 MLAs in the 224-member House, elections to which were held on 5 May.

2013 : Water Conservation Year in India
- On 9 May 2013, the Union Cabinet of India gave its approval to declare the year 2013 as Water Conservation Year.
- A number of mass awareness activities will be undertaken during Water Conservation Year 2013 with emphasis on sensitizing the masses on water related issues, encourage them to conserve and use it judiciously.
- India has more than 18 percent of the world's population, but has only 4 percent of world's renewable water resources.
- With growing population and rising needs, per capita availability of water is likely to go down from 1545 cubic meter per annum in 2011 to 1341 cubic meter per annum in 2025.
- In view of this, the Ministry had prepared National Water Policy (2012), which was adopted by the National Water Resources Council headed by the Prime Minister on 28.12.2012.
- It is to be noted that Water Conservation is also the key objective of the National Water Mission, which is one of the eight National Missions under the National Action Plan for Climate Change.
H041 : Sex Superbug
- There’s a new superbug out there and experts fear it’s going to be deadlier than AIDS.
- In April, 2013 two cases of the “sex superbug” have been found in Hawaii.
- The superbug, which is an antibiotic-resistant strain of gonorrhea, has the potential to be as deadly or even deadlier than AIDS.
- The new strain of gonorrhea is known as H041 & it was first discovered in 2009 in Japan after a sex worker fell victim to the superbug.
- Since it resists current antibiotic treatment, the strain has been placed in the superbug category with other resistant bacteria, such as MRSA and CRE.
- It is to be noted that Gonorrhea is a common human sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, with over 700,000 cases in the United States each year.
- The gonorrhea strain has not yet claimed any lives, but the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have asked Congress for $54 million to find an antibiotic to treat the strain.
Government of India approved National Cyber Security Policy
- On 8 May 2013 Government of India approved the National Cyber Security Policy that aims to create a secure computing environment in the country.
- The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved the policy which stresses on augmenting India’s indigenous capabilities in terms of developing the cyber security set up.
- This policy caters for the whole spectrum of ICT users and providers including small and home users, medium and large enterprises and government and non-government entities.
- It is to be noted that in April, 2013 the EC Council and the Institute of Advance Network Technology (IANT) have teamed up in an effort to train 10,000 students and professionals that would become India’s cyber warriors.
- According to studies, India needs 4.7 lakh cyber security professionals by 2015.

Karnataka Elections 2013 : Congress wins clear majority after 14 years
- The 2013 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election was held on 5 May, 2013.
- The elections were held in single phase for 223 out of all 224 assembly constituencies in Karnataka.
- In these elections 70.23% voter turnout was recorded.
- Election of Periyapatna constituency had been adjourned due to death of BJP candidate, Sannamoge Gowda, a day before polls.
- Counting of votes was held on May 8, 2013.
- Congress has won a clear majority in the Karnataka Assembly elections bagging 121 out of the 223 seats contested.
- The 121 seats won by Congress was eight above the majority mark, with a vote share of 36.6%.
- The ruling BJP and the JD-S won 40 seats each.
- Congress last enjoyed unfettered power in 1999, while it shared the government with Janata Dal (Secular) between 2004 and 2006.
- Siddaramaiah and Mallikarjuna Kharge are seen as front-runners for the chief minister's post in Karnataka.
- Twelve ministers of the outgoing Jagadish Shettar cabinet, including his deputy KS Eshwarappa, bit the dust.

2012–13 I-League : Churchill Brothers win second I-League title
- I-League is the Indian professional league for association football clubs.
- It was established in the year 2007.
- The 2012–13 I-League was the 6th season of the I-League.
- The season began on 6th October, 2012 & will finish on 12th May, 2013.
- On 7th May, 2013 Churchill Brothers Sports Club of Goa comfortably won their second I-League football title with a match to spare by playing out a 1-1 draw with Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan at the Tilak Maidan in Vasco, Goa.
- It is to be noted that the Goan side claimed their maiden honour under Serbian coach Zoran Djodjevic in the I-League season 2008-09.
Najib Razak sworn in as Prime Minister in Malaysia
- On 6 May 2013, current Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was sworn in for a second term by Malaysia’s king Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah.
- The 13-party Barisan Nasional (National Front), led by Prime Minister Najib Razak, secured 112 of the 222 parliamentary seats on 05th May 2013.
- Najib previously held the post of Deputy Prime Minister from 7 January 2004 until he succeeded Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as Prime Minister on 3 April 2009.
- He is the son of Malaysia's second prime minister, Tun Abdul Razak and the nephew of Malaysia's third prime minister, Tun Hussein Onn.

Creative Index Report 2013
- On 6th May, 2013 Creative Index Report 2013, the first in the series, launched by the Martin Prosperity Institute (MPI), Institute for Competitiveness and The Prosperity Institute of India (TPII).
- The report analyses India's creative economic assets across its 28 states and seven UTs.
- The report explores the presence of the 3Ts - Technology, Talent and Tolerance in economic development within each state and Union territory in India.
- According to the report, Delhi has been ranked as the most creative state in India with the greatest potential for success in today’s creative economy.
- Chandigarh, Punjab, Kerala, Goa, Mizoram, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Puducherry, and Maharashtra round out the top nine.
- Haryana and Manipur are tied for the 10th position.
TRAI : UP has most mobile phone subscribers in India
- Data from Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) showed India had a total of 861.66 million mobile connections as on February 2013, falling by 0.11 per cent from 862.6 million in January 2013.
- The country’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, accounts for the largest number of mobile subscribers in the country followed by Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar.
- Uttar Pradesh witnessed a total of 121.6 million mobile phone connections, followed by Tamil Nadu at 71.81 million.
- Maharashtra came in third with a total subscriber base of 67.73 million.
